Our Tiny Little Worlds 2022

Shankill glacial till, Terrarium, silicone, water, live poetry reading & bungalow drowning

This work was a bungalow made from raw clay which I engulfed in water at the opening ~ accompanied with a reading of the below poem. The poem is about a dream I had in 2021 while living in Sligo during some of the worst winter storms & the drowning of the town Ballinahown to make way for the Poulaphouca reservoir in the 40s, and the idea that small little worlds/societies/value systems/eco-systems end every day & how to contend with the idea of the end of ours …

Dream, Night of the 29th March 2021

The sea wants her puddles back
She makes her claim
Thrusting boulders into pathways
Prams skuttle around new fissures

Like Poulaphouca was a premonition
Generations ahead
Mapping the loss of homestead
On to DNA in preparation for
More –

The dam took ten years to plan
One year to drown
Ballinahown
How did it feel to watch and wait

We destruct to develop
We didn’t know the sea would
Follow suit

I dream of water too
A drowning youth in a bubble of protection
Our tiny little worlds
I dive to the bottom of the deep
My body powerful and adept
To this heavier quantity
Of sea

What else can I do
but give her breath
On the small bit of land left

The sea wants her puddles back
As we lose our claim
